Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is an advanced skin rejuvenation treatment that uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries, like tiny punctures, in the skin’s surface.

These micro-injuries are small enough to heal quickly, yet powerful enough to trigger a cascade of healthy biological processes. As the skin repairs itself, it boosts the production of collagen and elastin, 2 essential proteins responsible for maintaining firm, smooth, and youthful-looking skin.

What to Expect Before, During, and After SkinPen Microneedling

Before any treatment, our skincare specialists at Couture Med Spa will discuss your skin concerns, goals, and medical history to determine if SkinPen microneedling is the right treatment for you. Here’s an overview of what pre and post treatment care may look like.

Before treatment

In the week leading up to your microneedling session, there are a few important guidelines to follow:

• Avoid direct sun exposure and prevent sunburns. We cannot treat patients who have signs of sunburn on their face.
• Discontinue use of Retinol (tretinoin), glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or any harsh exfoliating products at least one week before treatment.
• Patients who are currently on Accutane are not eligible for microneedling unless they have stopped treatment at least six months prior.

During treatment

On the day of your appointment, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and topical numbing cream will be applied to minimize any discomfort. Once your skin is numb, one of our skincare specialists will use the SkinPen device to gently glide across the treatment area, creating thousands of controlled micro-injuries.

Thanks to the numbing cream, most patients report feeling little to no discomfort during the procedure, which should take around 30 minutes.

After treatment

Immediately following the treatment, your skin may appear red and feel sensitive, similar to a mild sunburn. Redness and mild swelling are normal and typically subside within 1 to 4 days.

After the treatment, some guidelines to follow include:

• Do not touch or wash your face for the first 24 hours following treatment.
• For the first 24 hours, only apply the HG Lift serum provided — nothing else should be used on the skin during this time.
• After 24 hours, you may begin using a gentle cleanser, oil-free moisturizer, and a physical (mineral-based) SPF. Continue this simplified routine for the next 5 days.
• Avoid sweaty workouts and direct sun exposure for at least 3 days post-treatment.
• If no irritation is present, you may resume your normal skincare routine after 5 days.

Your skin will continue to improve over the weeks following your SkinPen microneedling treatment as new collagen and elastin are gradually produced.

While some initial improvements like brighter complexion and smoother texture may be visible within the first week, the full benefits typically develop over the course of several weeks.

For optimal results, we recommend a series of at least 3 treatments, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. This approach allows your skin to fully heal and regenerate between sessions, leading to noticeable and long-lasting improvements in texture, tone, and overall appearance.
